Hans Koller New Jazz Stars: Hamburg Souvenirs 1953

Hans Koller, tenor saxophone
Albert Mangelsdorff, trombone
Jutta Hipp, piano
Karl Sanner, drums
Shorty Röder, bass

March 9, 1953 at NDR studios, Hamburg, Germany

1. The way you look tonight (Kern/Fields)
2. Indian Summer (Herbert/Dubin)
3. You go to my head (Coots/Gillespie)
4. All the things you are (Kern/ Hammerstein)

Hans Koller was one of the best known Austrian Jazz musicians. Koller formed his quartet with pianist Jutta Hipp, bassist Shorty Roeder and drummer Karl Sanner. The group was one of Europe's most popular units in the early 1950s (recording Hans Is Hip, 1952; "5 stars" by Down Beat). Trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff became member of his band in 1953. Koller had frequent contact with American jazzmen, among others with Dizzy Gillespie, whom he invited to Hamburg for a recording at NDR.

Thanks so much. Recently I'm digging those recordings from the end fifties to mid sixties. And Hans Koller is one I'm appreciating quite a lot!
