Jeff Ballard Trio live at Rolf-Liebermann-Studio 2011

One of the most exciting drummers in jazz today, Jeff Ballard, may be best known for being a member of piano phenom Brad Mehldau's Trio, but he also leads his own groups, and his newest features Miguel Zenon on saxophone and Lionel Loueke on guitar.
After three years with Ray Charles, Ballard moved to New York City, where he soon began to play with jazz giants including Eddie Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, Lou Donaldson, Danilo Perez and Chick Corea, as well as up-and-coming players closer to his age, including Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mehldau, Avishai Cohen, Larry Grenadier and Guillermo Klein. His newest trio, with Zenon and Loueke, comes from sessions with some of his closest collaborators.
"I met Miguel [Zenon] through playing in Guillermo Klein's band, and I met Lionel [Loueke] for the first time when we played in a group with Avishai Cohen, the trumpet player," Ballard says.
Saxophone, guitar and drums is an unusual combination for a jazz group, though there is one outstanding trio led by drummer Paul Motian, with saxophonist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell. But Ballard says they weren't an influence on his group.
"I put this trio together not thinking of Paul's trio, but afterwards, I have thought of it like a World Music-Paul Motian trio thing," he says. "They are both from cultures which are rich in the tradition of the drum, and this allows us to meet in a similar place musically."
While Ballard and his trio might meet in a similar place musically as Motian's trio, they journey to places far away from the usual musical fare. While Ballard is quick to complement the sound and skills of his fellow players, he also draws attention to the importance of his diverse drum kit - which contains drums from around the world with real skin heads - in the trio's sound. But above all, he says, it is the group's serious approach to music that sets them apart.
"For me, it's not good enough just to have ability. There must be a life energy to it with reasons and feelings and understanding as to why. Music is one of the highest things we have in life. We can be proud that it is a human invention," he says.
This fine trio hasn´t recorded an album so far, the latest album available by Jeff is the 2009 record "Sky & Country" featuring FLY, another trio with Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier and Mark Turner.

The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performer/composers at work in jazz today. Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ—the West Coast’s largest nonprofit jazz institution and the presenter of the annual San Francisco Jazz Festival—the Collective has quickly become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the American and international jazz scenes. As The New York Times hailed the Collective upon its debut: “A serious jazz band rises in San Francisco.”
In addition to its outstanding line-up, the SFJAZZ Collective has been praised for its innovative approach to repertoire. Each year, the ensemble performs an entirely new list of compositions by a modern jazz master and new pieces by the Collective members
After exploring the work of Ornette Coleman (2004), John Coltrane (2005), Herbie Hancock (2006), Thelonious Monk (2007), Wayne Shorter (2008), and McCoy Tyner (2009), the Collective takes on hard-bop composer and pianist Horace Silver for its 2010 season. The co-founder of the Jazz Messengers (with Art Blakey), and the leader on countless classic Blue Note sessions, Silver stands as one of the singular voices in jazz history.
Each program has been released on CD, available from SF Jazz.

Vernice "Bunky" Green´s big break came when he was hired in New York City by Charles Mingus as a replacement for Jackie McLean in the 1960s. His brief stint with the eccentric bass player made a deep impression. Mingus' sparing use of notation and his belief that there was no such thing as a wrong note had a lasting influence on Green's own style.
Originally strongly influenced by Charlie Parker, Green spent a period reassessing his style and studying, emerging with a highly distinctive sound that has deeply influenced a number of younger saxophonists, including Steve Coleman and Greg Osby.
Green gradually withdrew from the public eye to develop a career as a leading jazz educator. At JazzBaltica 2007 he had his on stage debut in Germany featuring his "Salzau Quartet" with Carsten Daerr, Eva Kruse and Nasheet Waits. That concert was released on CD in 2008 on Traumton records.

Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There, he studied classical saxophone at the famed Escuela Libre de Musica. Although Zenón was exposed to jazz while in high school, it wasn’t until he began his studies at the Berklee School of Music that his formal jazz training began.
In 2004 Zenón was asked to become one of the founding members of the SF Jazz Collective.
Esta Plena, his latest outing on cd, was released on Marsalis Music.
Earthy and sophisticated, the music of Esta Plena suggests a summing up of the work of saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenón thus far. It is rooted in the traditional plena music of Zenón´s native Puerto Rico – reinterpreted with the sensibility, the approach and the tools of 21st century jazz.
