She immediately sought out Bob Brookmeyer to study composition, and at the same time became an assistant to Gil Evans, working on various projects with him. She became widely known through the orchestra she founded in 1992.
'Concert in the Garden' and her orchestra's latest album, 'Sky Blue' (on which 'Cerulean Skies' was recorded) were both awarded 'Jazz Album of the Year' by the Jazz Journalists Association and the DOWNBEAT Critics Poll. 2008 and 2009 brought further honors as she and her orchestra were awarded “Best Composer, Best Arranger and Best Big Band” from both the Jazz Journalist Association and the DOWNBEAT Critics Poll.

In 1980, after 6 semesters, Thomas went to the states and started a degree-plan in music, but his focus had turned to jazz and eventually he finished as a „Bachelor of Music & Arts“ in Jazz-Performance. After having played with the likes of Bobby Shew, Mel Lewis, Lou Marini, Conexion Latina, HR-BigBand, Albert Mangelsdorf BigBand and Dusko Gojkovic BigBand, just to name a few, he founded his own Big Band in 2003. In 2009 he "reduced" this BigBand to a "small big band" called Palingenesis to have more freedom in writing and arranging. 9. Sly Eyes (Kenny Wheeler)

He has gained international reputation as a member of Chick Coreas Origin and Bill Bruford’s Earth Works, his unique arrangements are praised by Pat Metheny as well as numerous symphonic orchestras and he is a sought-after composer for tv-spots. Tim Garland’s main focus for live performance, though, ist the Lighthouse Trio that emerged from his award winning project from 2005 – If The Sea Replied where the trio recorded solo improvisations inside a lighthouse and is joined by a string orchestra.
Asaf Sirkis – (playing a custom built percussion set of frame drums, bass Udu, Hang drum and more), Garland on saxes and bass clarinet, and celebrated young pianist Gwilym Simcock, are an orchestra unto themselves, mixing a range of rhythms from the Middle East, Spain and South America with highly interactive and lyrical jazz.

“Meaty harmonies underpin strong melodic lines tinged with references to Celtic folk strains and the blues. Garland plays each of his three horns as though it were his main axe, grabbing your attention with limber phrasing and a centered tone that projects both gravitas and fire.” (Downbeat)
This is a repost of a concert posted earlier this year, since I now got the whole concert recorded

Ida Sand was born in 1977 into a very musical family in Stockholm. Her family roots lie in Piteå, a town in the far north of Sweden. As fascinating as jazz was to Ida, her musical influences remained Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin. After graduating in 2000, she worked continually, spending her time doing nightclub gigs, playing piano bars and soul clubs. Always busy, always learning.
Since Ida started her career as a freelance singer and keyboard player, she has worked with the cream of the crop of the music scene in Sweden.
For the new album True Love (released on ACT), there has been no change of direction. Rather it takes on an even more personal sound than her previous work – one reason for this is that in the interim period Sand has become the mother of a baby girl. “Some of the songs have to do with my family and my good fortune to have a loving man and a child. But of course, I also sing other pieces that are more about companionship or have social meaning.” Did her pregnancy change her voice? “Not physically, but my attitude is different, and now it’s even more fun.”

8. Straight, No Chaser

Vernice "Bunky" Green´s big break came when he was hired in New York City by Charles Mingus as a replacement for Jackie McLean in the 1960s. His brief stint with the eccentric bass player made a deep impression. Mingus' sparing use of notation and his belief that there was no such thing as a wrong note had a lasting influence on Green's own style.
Originally strongly influenced by Charlie Parker, Green spent a period reassessing his style and studying, emerging with a highly distinctive sound that has deeply influenced a number of younger saxophonists, including Steve Coleman and Greg Osby.
Green gradually withdrew from the public eye to develop a career as a leading jazz educator. At JazzBaltica 2007 he had his on stage debut in Germany featuring his "Salzau Quartet" with Carsten Daerr, Eva Kruse and Nasheet Waits. That concert was released on CD in 2008 on Traumton records.

Short and longer stories are told with raw energy, heart and soul along with mania and melancholy. Odd meters and mysterious rhythms are played hairily groovy - with a lot of personal freedom.

I promised you earlier this year to present this concert to you...
The music of AMEO is so rich in direct or indirect quotes that you really don't know where to begin. Take Off! is true to it's name - the album is wild, headstrong, haunting, atmospheric, funny, disturbing - all at once. Pulling out all the stops, Daniel Glatzel uses musical registers from varied cultural references and alarmingly crazy time signatures, all with a nonchalance which borders on the outrageous. Big-band swing is interrupted by free-jazz cacophonies, and excerpts from crime movie soundtracks are mixed with fanfares of imaginary film production companies. All of a sudden the blissfully elated mood will shift to its opposite and we find ourselves in the middle of oppressive, sprawling soundscapes where all is boundless
and wonderful.

The AMEO are 20 young musicians all from differing musical and cultural backgrounds - from Germany, France, Switzerland, Canada, Norway, Japan, Thailand, the Czech Republic and South Korea. As leader, composer, arranger and woodwind player Glatzel is responsible for the record's concept as well as for composition and arrangement. AMEO have already left Korean concert halls and Bavarian provincial backwaters astonished, and occasionally frightened, with their harmonic adventures and rhythmic madness.

They also work closely together with the Indie-Band The Notwist - live and on their newest album "The Devil, You & Me". That each individual member of the orchestra must bring with them stylistic openness and the highest possible joy of playing goes without saying. It's a debut that leaves you asking what can possibly follow it.

In its seventh year of existence the JBBG - jazz bigband graz under leadership of German saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein and Austrian trumpeter Horst-Michael Schaffer is definitely a strong and unique voice on the European bigband map. With their newest album 'Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies' the band makes a huge leap forward. Composed by Horst-Michael Schaffer and produced by both of the bandleaders 'Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies' combines the cool electronic sounds of today’s clubscene with the power and sophistication of the 17–piece jazz bigband graz. High-virtuoso and energetic solos are framed by strong melodies and counterpoint, which lead to musical excursions to Minimal Music as well as to Argentina and Africa. As a special guest they invited Berlin-based Theremin artist Barbara Buchholz providing a few very special sounds with her ancient electronic instrument. On top of this leader Horst-Michael Schaffer himself surprises as a superb and convincing vocalist.

Coltrane formed his "classic" quartet in 1960, the following year marked his move from Atlantic to Impulse! by the release of "Africa Brass" and "Live at the Village Vanguard". Here I present two rare recordings done in Stuttgart by German Southwest Radio Station. While playing mostly standards in 1961 (together with Eric Dolphy), in 1963 the quartet played its own tunes.

In October 2007, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel invited Swiss pianist Jean-Paul Brodbeck to join his band and perform a new repertoire of songs Muthspiel had written for the quartet.
After a European trio tour they recorded the new music, which was released in April 2008 on Material Records. The new recording - entitled 'Earth Mountain' - is an extension of Muthspiel's work in the trio with Austrian twin brothers Matthias and Andreas Pichler. On 'Earth Mountain', Muthspiel and Brodbeck engage in a constant harmonic dialogue. The new pieces - at times leaning towards hip-hop and rock grooves - create a dense and earthy band sound, both inviting and daring. Add the fine rhythm section of the Pichler brothers on drums and bass, and compositions like 'Jackson's Pocket', 'Earth Mountain' or 'Radiohead' naturally unfold with an ecstatic energy.
