Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.” Born in Windom, Minnesota, Schneider arrived in New York City in 1985 after studies at the University of Minnesota, the University of Miami and the Eastman School of Music. She immediately sought out Bob Brookmeyer to study composition, and at the same time became an assistant to Gil Evans, working on various projects with him. She became widely known through the orchestra she founded in 1992.
'Concert in the Garden' and her orchestra's latest album, 'Sky Blue' (on which 'Cerulean Skies' was recorded) were both awarded 'Jazz Album of the Year' by the Jazz Journalists Association and the DOWNBEAT Critics Poll. 2008 and 2009 brought further honors as she and her orchestra were awarded “Best Composer, Best Arranger and Best Big Band” from both the Jazz Journalist Association and the DOWNBEAT Critics Poll.

In 2007 Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen recorded a live album for ECM with a trio similar to this one called "Live At Belleville" featuring some of the tunes played also in Cologne. “Live At Belleville” may be Arild’s most powerful trio recording since “Triptykon” with Garbarek and Vesala, back in 1972.

This year Jan Garbarek released the album "Dresden - In Concert" (as always on ECM), which is the first-ever live set from the highly-popular Garbarek Group. The band, now including Brazilian bassist Yuri Daniel, powers through repertoire old and new, and the Norwegian saxophonist is in top form, his exchanges with Indian percussion wizard Trilok Gurtu (replacing Manu Katche) particularly exciting.

Bass guitar hero Miller, best known for his peerless slap bass style, was Miles Davis’ right hand man for the last nine years of the trumpeter’s life. On this concert he pays homage to Miles and their crowning achievement together, Tutu. Thomas Bendzko was born into the family of the legendary, German Dixieland/Swing Trumpeter Eberhard Bendzko. At the early age of 9 Thomas started getting lessons on trumpet , which led ultimately to classical studies at the Conservatory of Bremen, Germany, from 1977-1980. In 1980, after 6 semesters, Thomas went to the states and started a degree-plan in music, but his focus had turned to jazz and eventually he finished as a „Bachelor of Music & Arts“ in Jazz-Performance. After having played with the likes of Bobby Shew, Mel Lewis, Lou Marini, Conexion Latina, HR-BigBand, Albert Mangelsdorf BigBand and Dusko Gojkovic BigBand, just to name a few, he founded his own Big Band in 2003. In 2009 he "reduced" this BigBand to a "small big band" called Palingenesis to have more freedom in writing and arranging. Thomas tries to get away from straight ahead , mainstream - type jazz and explores more and more the beauty of odd-meters.

Philipp Stauber, born 1965, grew up in Olching near Munich, Germany, studied jazz guitar with Kosta Lukacs, Karl Ratzer, Howard Roberts and Joe Pass. As a typical arch top player he plays in the tradition of Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery. As a sideman he has played among others with Giora Feidman, Bobby Watson and Paolo Cardoso. His latest recording is called "four colours - one picture".

Torben Waldorff, born in Denmark, is based in the Oresund region of Malmo, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark. After having attended Berklee College of Music from 1984 to 88 studying with Herb Pomeroy and Charlie Banacos and gigging the Boston clubs with Sam Newsome, Jim Black a.o. Torben moved to Copenhagen in 89 and gigged the Denmark festival and club scene
"Afterburn" is his second ArtistShare release, following 2006's Brilliance: Live at the 55 Bar, further showing a player with a distinct presence whose music conveys modernism and his Scandinavian roots.

He has gained international reputation as a member of Chick Coreas Origin and Bill Bruford’s Earth Works, his unique arrangements are praised by Pat Metheny as well as numerous symphonic orchestras and he is a sought-after composer for tv-spots. Tim Garland’s main focus for live performance, though, ist the Lighthouse Trio that emerged from his award winning project from 2005 – If The Sea Replied where the trio recorded solo improvisations inside a lighthouse and is joined by a string orchestra.
Asaf Sirkis – (playing a custom built percussion set of frame drums, bass Udu, Hang drum and more), Garland on saxes and bass clarinet, and celebrated young pianist Gwilym Simcock, are an orchestra unto themselves, mixing a range of rhythms from the Middle East, Spain and South America with highly interactive and lyrical jazz.

“Meaty harmonies underpin strong melodic lines tinged with references to Celtic folk strains and the blues. Garland plays each of his three horns as though it were his main axe, grabbing your attention with limber phrasing and a centered tone that projects both gravitas and fire.” (Downbeat)

Ida Sand was born in 1977 into a very musical family in Stockholm. Her family roots lie in Piteå, a town in the far north of Sweden. As fascinating as jazz was to Ida, her musical influences remained Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin. After graduating in 2000, she worked continually, spending her time doing nightclub gigs, playing piano bars and soul clubs. Always busy, always learning.
Since Ida started her career as a freelance singer and keyboard player, she has worked with the cream of the crop of the music scene in Sweden.
For the new album True Love (released on ACT), there has been no change of direction. Rather it takes on an even more personal sound than her previous work – one reason for this is that in the interim period Sand has become the mother of a baby girl. “Some of the songs have to do with my family and my good fortune to have a loving man and a child. But of course, I also sing other pieces that are more about companionship or have social meaning.” Did her pregnancy change her voice? “Not physically, but my attitude is different, and now it’s even more fun.”
